Fish oil has been considered as one of the best nutrients required by our body. It helps in a lot of ways and impacts almost everything from urban living and bone density to fat burning as well as mental strength. It is one of the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids which help your body develop a powerful brain and prevent health conditions like cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart conditions and irritable bowel syndrome.
Benefits Of Taking Omega 3
The health benefits of taking Omega 3 abound, and fish oil is the best food to help you add Omega 3 to your body. Let us look at some of the most common benefits of taking fish oil supplements.
1. Protects you from air pollution
You may not have thought about this one. One of the many benefits of taking fish oil supplements is that it protects your heart from air pollution which you do not have much control over. A 2012 American study showed that individuals who were exposed to unclean air after taking a 3g dosage of fish oil for four weeks showed lower impact of the air on their body than those who were exposed to polluted air without a dosage of fish oil. The Omega 3 fatty acids present in fish oil help you deter the unwanted cardiac and lipid effects that are associated with air pollution exposure. If you lead a city life, fish oil can help you stay away from the adverse effects of breathing in the city air without you having to stay in your house to avoid the relatively unclean city air.

4. Fights depression and anxiety
The Omega 3 fatty acids relieve you from sadness, mental fatigue, stress, depression and other nervous disorders. Interestingly enough, it is promoted that fish oil must be given to children from an early age. This is because it helps in developing mental stability and reduces the chances of the children falling prey to depression and anxiety later on in life. When fish oil is consumed as a supplement when the brain is developing, it helps avoid many conditions of the mental state of mind.
5. Good for your skin
Fish oil is good for maintaining good skin health if you have dry skin. It is also very useful in treating a variety of skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, itching and rashes. When you consume fish oil regularly, it helps in reducing the loss of moisture from your skin which ensure that your skin stays supple and fresh for most part of the day. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, fish oil is also good to get rid of many skin problems. One of the benefits of taking fish oil supplements is that it also helps in reducing acne by inhibiting androgen formation.
6. Improves fat burning
When fish oil supplements are combined with regular workout sessions, they can help you reduce weight by burning fat. 7. Boosts brain power
Fish oil supplements are linked closely with better cognitive powers and a stronger brain. It is very good for children who are developing their brains. The health benefits of taking Omega 3 are beyond the usual health conditions. It also facilitates mental growth so that your child can be stronger when it comes to the brain as well. This is one of the reasons why it is suggested that you must have fish oil to avoid Alzheimer’s disease because fish oil slows down cognitive decline and also helps in brain atrophy among adults.

Clinical trials conducted by the American Heart Association have showed the Omega 3s can be very effective when it comes to dealing with cardiovascular diseases. It helps in reducing the levels of LDL – often termed as bad cholesterol, and it increases the good cholesterol levels in your body. This is why fish oil plays an important role in preventing heart problems like strokes and reduces the chances of cardiac death. It also promotes weight loss which in turn makes it easier for you to lead a heart-healthy life.

I had no idea fish oil has so many benefits. I knew it had something to do with making a healthier heart. But some of the stuff on this is totally new to me. What are your recommendations for what time of day to take fish oil? Can I take it with my regular daily multivitamin? What are the qualities I should look for in the best fish oil on the market? Thanks. Alyssa
If there are so many benefits to supplementing fish oil to your diet, why doesn’t everyone take fish oil? Do you know any disadvantages to taking fish oil? Maybe fish oil is the best source for Omega 3 fatty acids, but what are some other sources for Omega 3s?
Very informative….thanks for the knowledge!
Fish oil has a lot of great health benefits. But while we are talking about its benefits, I think it’s good to also mention it thins your blood making you more prone to bleeding. I’m afraid of taking fish oil during winters due to this since the cold dry air in winter dries my nose making it vulnerable to nosebleeds. Sometimes I can’t even sneeze my nose without a little bit of blood coming which has made me very cautious towards anything that could cause nosebleeds during winter.
Hi.
The American Heart Association recommends that taking 3 grams of fish oil daily is safe. You might experience bleeding when you take above 3 grams daily.
Generally, it is recommended that everyone eats at least three times a week of fish that contains omega 3(Fatty, cold water fish), this is because of the many benefits derived from it. our hearts are safer and triglycerides reduced when we make omega 3 part of our daily diets. the benefits far supersede the disadvantages. Stick to the recommended 3 grams daily and your heart will thank you for that.
Seek medical advice if you have issues with omega 3 before taking.
Thanks.

Hi Chris P.
Thanks for your comment. A lot of people are becoming aware of the immense benefits of taking omega 3 supplementation especial those that are not able to get enough from Natural sources.
Natural know sources of omega 3 fatty acids are Sardines, Salmon, mackerel, Lake trout, herring etc. This fishes are known to contain high amount of omega 3 fatty acids.
Taking high amount of fish oil supplementation especially above 3grams may lead to bleeding.
I hope this will help!
What a great article about fish oil and its benefits. I think anything to do with fish consumption is of benefit to us. If you do eat a lot of fatty fish like mackerel and sardines then you will be getting plenty of omega 3 fatty acids.
I did not know about the thinning of the blood. I can understand how some would be a bit wary of this effect but I suspect that unless you take large quantities, the problem will not occur. Keeping the blood thinner rather than thicker IMHO is the better alternative and will help to alleviate blocked arteries.
A well researched and very informative post, thanks. Ches

True, I knew the benefits of omega 3’s. I eat fish, just about every other day (mainly salmon). So I get my fish oil from this. I also get a healthy dose of protein to go with it. The only one I wasn’t aware of was the one about bone health.
